India exclusive drive: Audi R8 – makes it clear

India is one of the fastest growing automobile markets in the world. The growth of the economy has ensured that more buyers flock to the car market. Off late, there has also been an upward trend in the luxury segment because of the nouveau riche, a result of the booming economy.

German luxury car maker Audi came out with Audi R8, an admirable vehicle and is highly impressed with its appealing design and power. It can definitely be called the car from the future, for the future.

External features

There’s a redesigned bumper, round LED headlights, a R8 logo, restyled rear diffuser and a new rounded single exhaust protrudes from its back. It Audi’s trademark Quattro with all wheel drive system and is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo. The body is made up of aluminium monocoque. The hexagonal Audi grille and the air intakes are the other external features. The all-LED tail-lights have turn indicators. Cabin space

The cabin is spacious and luxurious. The Bang and Olufsen System comes with 12 speakers. The steering wheel feels light. The information and navigation screen is positioned right over the CD player. The interiors are spacious and comfortable. The leather seats are well positioned.

Power mill

So what’s so special about the engines? The two engines offered in the Indian market are a 4.2-litre V8 and a 5.2-litre V10. Two more variants exist in the international market. The 4.2 litre four valve per cylinder V8 petrol engine offers a maximum output of 423.8 bhp at 7900 rpm while the torque reaches a peaks of 430 Nm at 4500 rpm to 6000 rpm. This engine has FSI technology for a better flow of engine revolutions. The Lamborghini-sourced 10-cylinder 5.2-litre V10 motor develops 517.6 bhp at 8000 rpm while the torque the engine can reach is 530 Nm at 6500 rpm. It’s mated to a 7-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox.



The Audi R8 V10 can reach the 100 kmph mark in 3.6 s while the top speed is 311kph. The Audi R8 4.2 litre offers 7 kmpl mileage in the city and 8.5 kmpl on highways. The Audi R8 5.2 offers a mileage of 4.5 kmpl in the city and 9 kmpl on highways.

Safety matters

Audi R8 features the standard safety characteristics like Anti lock braking system, EBD, central locking, brake assist, engine immobiliser, airbags for the driver and the passengers, power door locks, engine check warning, adjustable seats, and crash sensor.

High competitors

A super car like Audi R8 will compete with its own standards – Jaguar F Type, BMW M6 and the Lamborghini Gallardo.
